Construction of new school building and playing areas in York
NTA Planning was instructed to manage pre-application and planning application stages for the demolition of an existing school and construction of a new single storey school block, delivering a new school and outside areas for the children and staff of Tang Hall Primary School in York.
This project saw the delivery of a new school block for a one-form entry primary school, delivered via the Dept for Education School Rebuilding Programme. Built to DFE Output Spec 21 standards, the new school will be Net Zero Carbon in Operation, whilst also delivering uplifts in both Urban Greening Factor and Biodiversity Net Gain.
The development required the design team to overcome significant planning challenges, such as the justification of the demolition of a non-designated heritage asset, delivering a new school block on a highly restricted school site, and ensuring that all high-grade trees were retained on site and protected throughout. Following positive pre-application and public consultation stages, a planning application was submitted in May 2024, with planning permission granted via committee in September 2024. Construction works will commence in late 2024.
