Construction of a replacement school in York.
NTA Planning was instructed to manage pre-application and planning application stages for the demolition of an existing school and construction of a new two storey school block, delivering a new school for the children and staff of Hempland Primary School in York.
This project saw the delivery of a new school block for a two-form entry primary school, delivered via the Dept for Education School Rebuilding Programme. Built to DFE Output Spec 21 standards, the new school will be Net Zero Carbon in Operation, whilst also delivering uplifts in both Urban Greening Factor and Biodiversity Net Gain.
The development required the design team to overcome significant planning challenges, such as delivering a new school block on an existing playing field, and significant logistical challenges regarding construction access while keeping the school operational at all times. Following positive pre-application and public consultation stages, a planning application was submitted in July 2023, with planning permission granted via committee in November 2023. Construction works commenced in early 2024, and are expected to complete in 2025.
